History
In 1890, Thomas Edison, the inventor of the incandescent electric light bulb, established the Edison General Electric Company. Around the same time a competitor - the Thomson-Houston company - was formed and became a dominant electrical innovation company. As both businesses expanded they began to rely on each other to produce complete electrical installations and so in 1892 the two companies combined to create the General Electric Company (GE).
GE is the only company listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Index today that was also included in the original index in 1896.
